Black pather dvd1/10/2024 ![]() More damaging is that T'Challa himself is kind of boring and never really pops as an engaging hero. But Hudlin seems so insistent on ignoring the normal characterization on so many of these folks that it becomes frustrating, as almost everyone seems to be acting out of character. If you're a Marvel fanboy like me, there is the innate fun of seeing Black Panther in action, in a series that pulls in lots of other Marvel elements – Storm and Juggernaut have notable roles, while several other X-Men (including Wolverine) plus Captain America (in a World War II flashback) also show up, among others. There's never much storywise to grab onto in the six episodes, which follow the villain Klaw in his attempt to kill Black Panther, while multiple forces attempt to gain control of T'Challa's country's valuable resources. The plotline and specific adventures in the series lack the atmosphere and coolness that other writers, most notably Christopher Priest, have brought to the character in the past. Reginald Hudlin adapted his own comic book stories, which is another problem – In the interview with Hudlin available as an extra, his enthusiasm and love for T'Challa, the Black Panther, is clear, but frankly, his storytelling here is rather weak and pedestrian. Here, you have a cool Marvel character starring in what was meant to be an animated TV series, airing on a popular cable channel, and as such, its weaknesses compared to other shows of this sort - like say The Spectacular Spider-Man or Batman: The Brave and the Bold - are more glaring. Granted, the current wave of online and DVD "motion comics" does this too, but I think the big difference there is that going in, it's understood what the intent is and those projects are properly identified. ![]() Remember those cheesy 1960s Marvel animated series, like Thor and Iron Man, that took frames from the comic books and crudely moved them? Black Panther is pretty much an updated, semi-fancier version of that, as it uses John Romita Jr.'s Black Panther comic book panels (great stuff in the comics, mind you), and then has poor, incredibly stiff animation added to make the lips of the characters move and to have them awkwardly walk, fly or fight. First and foremost, the most notable issue with Black Panther is how barely animated it is for an animated series. Unfortunately, watching the six-episodes of the series on this DVD, I'm not too shocked by the decision to not air it.
